Outdoor Wednesday - Texas State Cemetery

It's Wednesday, which means it's time for one of my favorite blog events. Outdoor Wednesday is graciously hosted by Susan at A Southern Daydreamer every week. Visit Susan weekly to see some outstanding outdoor photographs from all over the world!

We've had some beautiful fall weather here in Central Texas. Sunday was overcast and the skies had a slightly ominous look to them. DH and I decided to trek into Austin and take some photographs at the Texas State Cemetery. If you ever find yourself in the Austin area, make sure to visit this beautiful historical site. The grounds are absolutely gorgeous, and there is so much history there. You can almost hear the stories whispering in the trees.

Upon entering, the first thing you encounter is this lovely rock waterfall and stream. The stream meanders throughout the grounds reflecting the beautiful trees and sky.

Beautiful path under a regiment of Texas State Flags leading into the cemetery

Stephen F. Austin died and was buried in Columbia, Texas. In 1910, his remains were re-interred at the Texas State Cemetery.

I just thought that this moss covered monument was lovely.

Burial site of General Albert Sidney Johnston. The statue inside the tomb was carved by Elisabet Ney, famed 19th century sculptress from Austin.

I hope you enjoyed this tour of the "Arlington of Texas". It truly is a serene, peaceful place full of history and beauty. Don't forget to visit Susan to see what others are sharing this week.

At the risk of sounding weird, I find most cemeteries to be beautiful. The grounds are well kept and the trees lovely. Your photos reflect that beauty.

My dad is buried in Texas, at Ft. Bliss Army Base in El Paso.

I like the photo of the cemetary - dark clouds make it sober. Very "proper" atmosphere and beautiful memorial

I think cemeteries are fascinating. They're sort of like history books -- you can learn a lot from the names and dates on the tombstones.

We went to the Titanic cemetery on our trip to Halifax in September. One of the names on a tombstone there was very similar to my great-grandfather's name. I have no idea if the two of them were related, but it sure got me to wondering!!

Did you get my e-mail with the information about the tiles and lens??

Those are some lovely photos. We have a National Cemetary in Chattanooga that has some of those features, but not the lovely water.

Hi Kathy
I love to visit old cemeteries..they are like history books. The Austin Cemetery is beautiful! The 9/11 memorial was very touching to see.

My husband and I volunteer work for a National Landmark cemetery her ein Brooklyn, NY that dates back to 1843. We do Civil War veteran research to help identify veterans from that war that never received a headstone from the Veterans Administration. When we find one we order a headstone for them. We found quite a few confederate soldiers buried here amd the Daughters of the Confederate have visited us!

Love the gray sky. My husband loves old graveyards, and now we have one in the yard...smaller (not in TX)1 marker but historic. Like your "emptynester" title...they don't always stay empty.

These are great. I like the Confederate Field and the one above it best.

I take pictures all over Philadelphia. I guess I don't blend in very well though. I still have my Texas licence plate
and I wear a California Angels ball cap. :)

Kathy, this is gorgeous! And I love the Confederate graves. Our CAR (Children of the American Revolution) chapter used to decorate the ones in our cemetery on Confederate Memorial Day and the ones on the other graves on Memorial Day. Loved seeing this.

XO,

Sheila... who is so thankful to be back online! :-)

Great photos Kathy! I love cemeteries and visit the ones in Georgia whenever I go. Some are definitely off the beaten track. We have a small family cemetery in Georgia on the farm my great-grandfather started in the late 1800s. Everyone buried there is family and the stories for each are fascinating.

So nice to be back and visiting again!
