Alphabe Thursday - W is for ...

It's Thursday already! Time for my favorite class, Alphabe-Thursday. Mrs. Matlock has assigned the letter W this week. Don't be late for class, Mrs. Matlock is a stickler for punctuality!

It's summertime. It's hot. To borrow a phrase from Neil Simon, "it's Africa hot!". So naturally, the first W word I thought of was my favorite summer treat - Watermelon!

Oh, the delights of a cold slice of watermelon on a sultry summer day. My daddy was the watermelon king. That man could find the best melon in a stack 5 feet tall. One year we had a family gathering at St. George Island Florida. We asked dad to bring the watermelon. He pulled up with the entire back of his pickup truck full of melons! There were alot of us, and we all love watermelon, but there was no way we were going to be able to eat all of them in a week. We had already eaten the majority of the melons. We made watermelon ice. We made watermelon salsa. We had watermelon seed spitting contests. We were out of ideas! So my brother and DH decided to have a watermelon basketball game. They placed the garbage can under the second story balcony, and, well, you probably get the picture. Did you know that a splatting watermelon can travel a LONG way? I think it's one of those physics things that I forgot to pay attention to :)

Here's a hint. Don't park a white truck anywhere near the site of a watermelon drop! And someday I'll tell you the peach story. Oh, and the time we asked dad to bring the beer!

Hope you enjoyed my choice for W this week. Stop by and visit the links, this should be an interesting week. Now I'm going to go have some watermelon! Did I mention that it's really, really hot?

Cute! I always had Watermelon Week the last week of school when I was teaching. All the text books and library books had been turned in for counting so I created a week full of activities that centered around watermelons. It was a fun week and the students loved it. We always ended the last day with eating the watermelon and having a seed spitting contest. :-)
Glad they didn't think of the basketball idea. LOL
Stay cool ~ Sarah

Seeds...I will forever recall watermelon seeds...we had spitting contests, ok, not very ladylike, LOL
but I was there, participating with gusto...and you know what? I wasn't too bad!

WOW Kat, I have not thought about that for the longest time :)

Cute watermelon post. I am probably only one of a few that don't really love watermelon. I don' know why, but I am just not crazy about it like most people. Now I love cantalope especially a good sweet one.

MWAHAHAHA! Men after my own heart! That's the kind of 'experiment' I would do.

The same kind of thing I did when I was a kid and got in trouble for.

MWAHAHAHAHA!

My dad used to grow watermelons. Oh man are they great just off the vine. I think I love your father and his theory of overabundance.

Ssssh....don't tell your Mom but I think I love your Dad! He sounds wonderful! And how can you not fall in love with a feller that can find perfect melons?

What a fun stop on our little journey through Alphabe-Thursday's letter "W".

The white truck comment made me laugh for sure.

I loved your link this week.

Thank you for sharing it!

A+

I might have to buy a watermelon this weekend after reading your post! This reminds me of how my Dad used to float watermelons in his pool for my kids when they were little. He always let them fish the melons out and drop them on the pool deck, busting them open. The kids would eat them right there and then jump back in the water!

We love watermelons around here, too. I usually keep some cut up and ready to go for my boys to grab as a snack. Eaten outside, of course! I will not be sharing the basketball idea with them, though :-)

Great story! That watermelon drop would be very popular with our crowd. Very.

My husband is also a foolproof watermelon selecter. And I do LOVE a good watermelon!

I love watermelons but we haven't bought any this year yet. When you find a ripe one it's almost like a little bit of heaven. Great W post.

Hi Kathy Sweetie...
Oh thank you so much for stopping by and saying hello. I am thrilled you love the gerbera daisies and my new header. I decided it was time to start decorating for the 4th of July. I am a seasonal kind of gal. As I can't go outside, I might as well do something inside to decorate.

I have to tell you I laughed and laughed at this story. I too love watermelon. In Oklahoma they have the best watermelons called Black Diamond. They are more of a round watermelon but the juiciest and sweetest you will ever taste. Now I would like to hear the story about what Daddy pulled up with in his truck the time he was supposed to bring the beer. I feel another cute story coming on here. Love it.
And I can't wait to hear the peach story. Soon? Please.

I go back to see the doc on July 9th and he will make a decision as to whether or not I can be released to go back to work, and be released to be outside again. This week I started working from home. I have slept at night. It has played me out but in a good way.

Thank you for your prayers, love and concern. It means a lot to me. Have a beautiful weekend sweetie. Many hugs and much love back at you...Sherry

I could just picture your family's shenanigans and couldn't help but to laugh. It reminded me of the comedian Gallagher, do you know who he is? He used to smash watermelons on stage. Lucky for the first few rows in the audience, they were given a long plastic sheet to avoid the mess. So funny and he grew up in Tampa Bay. I used to go see him in California and then one day he showed up at a restaurant I was working at in Florida.. Nice guy and so funny!

Oh that melon looks so good. I have one on the counter but I don't have room in the fridge right now so I can't cut it. Soon, soon.
