Alphabe-Thursday - O is for Outdoor Festival!

Class is in session! Time once again for Alphabe-Thursday, taught by Mrs. Matlock. If you haven't been to class yet, it's ok. Mrs. Matlock makes all of the "newbies" feel welcome.
This week our assignment is on the letter O.

Last weekend was our town's annual Red Poppy Festival. There is nothing more fun than enjoying a fun outdoor festival on a beautiful Texas spring day!

Georgetown claims the title the Red Poppy Capitol of Texas. When we first moved here, this little celebration was held on the first weekend in May and was called Mayfest. Several years ago, they moved it up to April and renamed it the Red Poppy Festival. What started out as a small community celebration of spring has turned into a 2 1/2 day festival filled with a parade, music, food, art and fun. This year we had over 30,000 visitors!

The best part of the festival this year? DH's band was asked to play on the main stage. They call themselves "Borrowed Time" because they are all a bit long in the tooth to be starting the whole rock star thing :) 4 of the 6 band members met each other because our kids were all in band together. They discovered that they all played instruments, and starting playing together for fun. A friend of a friend recommended that they be asked to play the Poppy Festival. They didn't earn any money, but they had a great time. And they went over so well that they were asked to play next year as an opener for the Friday night street dance - for pay!

Now stop by and read Mrs. Matlock's rules. Then get cracking helping her to read this week's essays!

What an awesome way to spend a weekend. It's late here in the east and I'm growing tired...I keep hearing that poppies line from the Wizard of Oz running through my mind. Oh crap.

What an incredible festival. I love seeing the photos and feeling the excitement.

That is so cool about your hubby and his friends having a successful band. My hubby plays guitar and sings. Last count I think he has 6 guitars and he's always looking. As I look over from my computer there's two amplifiers, music stand, microphone stand....well you get it. He loves his music also.

I loved the trip to your festival...it looks wonderful! I can almost smell the funnel cakes cooking.

I'd love to hear a clip of your husbands band!

Can we get autographs?

Thanks for this outrageously sweet stop on my little journey through Alphabe-Thursday's Letter "O"!

married to a rock star? that MUST mean you are a model!!! :)

I wanna be cool like you. AZ doesn't really have festivals like this. Well, not here, anyway. So boring. Unlike being married to a rock star.

This sounds like such a special community event and now 2+ day festival. I can see why the town would celebrate. Poppies are so bright and joyful. Your DH is living every 40-something man's dream. How incredibly fun. Great post.

Poppy's are the State flower of California and we don't even get a festival that I know of. They are blooming everywhere right now though — and very beautiful. Maybe your husband can play a song just for fun and dedicate to our Calif. Poppy since we don't get a celebration. Glad you had fun. Texans know how to celebrate!
