Foodie Friday train wrecks

It's finally Friday folks! I hope your week wasn't nearly as trying as mine. So I'm more than ready to celebrate the end of the week with Foodie Friday, graciously hosted by Michael Lee, aka "Gollum" at Designs by Gollum. This week, we get to share our "Foodie Trainwrecks". Goodness knows, she could have this theme every week and I guarantee I could come up with a new one every time! Last week, I shared the beautiful cake that my daughter Cait made for a friend's wedding shower. The original recipe that she brought home looked something like this:

I kid you not, when we started reading the recipe we realized that it made no sense at all. The list of ingredients called for 3 whole eggs. The first step called for beating the eggs, then further down it said to add the separated egg yolks. What? As we got to the end, we realized that there was no mention of size of pan or oven temperature! Moral, read through BEFORE you start making the cake! So after a mad scramble to find a different recipe, we found one that sounded delicious. But, we did not have all of the ingredients. So back to the grocery store we went. This was the result of the first attempt.
Ours actually looked much worse than this! (but it still tasted great tee hee). Right about then, 2 of Cait's old high school buddies called and wanted to stop by. She said she would be thrilled to see them - with a wicked gleam in her beautiful baby blues! They had no idea what they were letting themselves in for!

The second attempt came out beautifully. Cait then experimented with fillings and came up with a raspberry/grand marnier/whipped cream mixture that was heavenly. Frosted the cake with a dark chocolate icing, sifted a bit of confectioners sugar on top, place some fresh raspberries and VOILA. This cake was unbelievable. But I must admit, it's the first 10 hour cake I've ever made. Kimmie, I hope you LOVED this cake!

This cake looks amazing....although I sneezed just looking at the icing...I'm a chocoholic but dark chocolate makes me sneeze something awful...the husband always can tell when I'm in the kitchen sneeking a piece of candy...the sneezing gives me away!!

LOL! This reminds me of the ten hour trifle that it took my both my husband and me to to make. I had to find Napolean Brandy from a friend because I was too cheap to buy a whole botte. It was made for a gourmet club which I always got the easiest recipes for because they knew I was inept in the kitchen, but that trifle was the best thing I ever had... but it took about twenty different pans and dishes to do it! AND a double boiler.

After 10 hrs I would be too tired to eat it:) I kept this recipe from last weeks post because the finished product looks amazing.

I've had lots of recipe trainwrecks! In other words...some recipes were trainwrecks to begin with!!

GM My friend...Girl I could write a book about flopping cakes..Now my mama made the most awesome looking cakes in the world...ones you didn't want to cut looking...now mine I try and cover up with lots of icing ha ha!! WOW that cake turned out so pretty looking and I am sure tasting! Thanks for stopping by to read about the time i almost killed my husband, lol. I thought of writing it a couple of times and then when this train wrecks and bloopers thing came up, I knew I HAD to write it down! sometimes they might looks so good but taste terrific....sometimes they are beautiful and don't taste so good...your final result looks great...and you have a fun story to tell...

That's one yummy sounding and looking cake!!! And on the bright side, even though it took 10 hours to make it, you and Cait got to spend LOTS of quality time together!! :-)

Love that cake! I would have loved a piece! I'm sure her friend just loved each bite!
