Kids should learn to read music, learn about music history, have studies in ethnomusicology, and music should be integrated into the other studies as well. Many of our kids are growing up to be dumb uninformed adults and what they lack carries into all of the other realms of knowledge.

Lee
Tossing It OutArlee Birdhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11663942782929929334noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-981957145092638479.post-32012342703946758542009-10-11T12:54:52.561-05:002009-10-11T12:54:52.561-05:00Reminder:

Well, after guitar lessons came voice lessons and a college major in music education and today is a music teacher and has a beautiful voice and sings in her church. I couldn't agree with you more how important the arts are in elementary and high school. I took music for one year, and that was it. Looking back, I wish I'd continued taking music classes -- I'd love to be able to play an instrument.

I'm still friends 30 years later with a lot of people who were in music all the way through high school. I know they all did well in school, and most of them have good jobs now.

I think arts in general need to be encouraged in high school.

KellyDesignTieshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02561438683476880640noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-981957145092638479.post-40330717823708971362009-10-04T21:30:59.480-05:002009-10-04T21:30:59.480-05:00I can't believe they are doing that, Kathy! I so agree that art and music is vital to the creativeness and coordination and mind development of a child. Now to answer your question, the plant do not have any smell, but I like the tricolors of the leaves. I can't wait to get the creeping thyme cause I heard they really smell good. BTW, did you see my home post on 10/1? I wanted to share it with you cause I spent so much time creating the mosaics, LOL! I was just getting ready to try to get my post together about the new house and saw your comment - I know some folks think TO MUCH attention is given to sports and not enough to the other arts and can be offended when someone mentions that. I do agree that children need to be exposed to everything so they can be well rounded adults - now - thanks for letting me rant a little!

Come back in a little while and I'll (hopefully) have some pics up - I'm really getting so excited - I told my mom the other day - I have so many ideas flowing through my brain I feel like my head is going to implode!Lynettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12609419970286357303noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-981957145092638479.post-36248116323391720042009-10-04T09:15:43.967-05:002009-10-04T09:15:43.967-05:00OK - have to admit you lost me about half way thro...OK - have to admit you lost me about half way through, but I do agree that music, reading and sports (I know sports are NOT the same thing) are all vital to having well rounded, productive children and when school admin start trying to take that away, they are taking a huge part of our children's growing up away and the learning and discipline they need to succeed in life.

Be passionate Kathy - about your love and interests - no need to apologize to any of us!Lynettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12609419970286357303noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-981957145092638479.post-734352460961307182009-10-04T07:48:04.496-05:002009-10-04T07:48:04.496-05:00Hi Kat! thanks for stopping by the Bhive and leavi...Hi Kat! thanks for stopping by the Bhive and leaving a comment! I *heart* Debbie she is such a dear!

I love your post on music. I remember learning songs at school that took us around the world.

I also LOVED your post on books. I love a new book and turning its crisp new pages. But what I like even better is the thrill of the hunt when browsing through a used book sale. That is just what is missing in so many of our students today...a real fire in them to learn and succeed! Your stats are very convincing and I am in total agreement because I see similar attempts to get rid of foreign languages in the schools. Your findings line up almost exactly for those students as well. Why is there an attempt to get rid of the finer things when they obviously add so much to a child's life...not just his/her education? It's beyond me! All I can say is...you go, girl! You are a force to be reckoned with and I applaud you!...hugs...DebbieConfessions of a Plate Addicthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14264220207447111061noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-981957145092638479.post-42232085185942963882009-10-03T19:49:22.297-05:002009-10-03T19:49:22.297-05:00Those are some pretty compelling statistics. It really is a shame that they are cutting out these programs in our schools. I know you have witnessed first hand the benefits of such programs with your darling Cait, and I have seen the same benefits with my children and grandchildren. Thanks for the great post. Maybe it will make a few people stop and think twice.
