Foodie Friday Bloopers

It's Friday, it's spring and I get to meet some fellow bloggers in person on Saturday - I am doing the happy dance here! But first, it's time for another edition of Foodie Friday, so graciously hosted every week by Gollum. If you haven't visited Gollum's blog yet, shame on you! She has the most wonderful decorating and cooking ideas, and her blog is just full of eye candy! Stop by http://designsbygollum.blogspot.com/ and visit - I guarantee that you'll go back again and again. This week's optional theme is "kitchen bloopers and mishaps". Goodness knows that I have had plenty of these. If you don't believe me, see last week's post where I nearly used ground cumin instead of cinnamon to roll candy! But the recipe mess up that I remember best actually involved my sister and I. I was perhaps 12, so Sis was 9. We got the brilliant idea to surprise everyone and make chocolate chip cookies. We didn't think it would be all that difficult. You see, we had a secret weapon.
I mean really, how hard could this be? A little water, a little oil, some egg . . . . We had visions of a delectable treat that looked just like this . . . .

Unfortunately, we neglected to notice that the cookie mix we had was for either one or two batches. Someone had already made one. We followed the directions for two. The batter was basically like tan water, so we thought, what the heck, it just needs some more flour. So we added some flour. ALOT of flour. We ended up with something that was more like this . . .

You've heard the expression measure twice, cut once? Well we learned the hard way that the same basic principal applies to cooking! Now pop on over to Gollum's place and see who else is admitting their most appalling kitchen catastrophes.

A valuable lesson, but I think those early trials and errors are what gives us a passion for cooking!

At least you were trying at an early age! As an adult, I would still do something like this. Fun story. Thanks for sharing. laurie

This is a great cooking story. Young Bandwith is just venturing into culinary creations, and he can't take the bloopers. I don't know how to explain that bloopers are necessary...and, for most of us, neverending.

At least you have the excuse of being very young.

You know cookies and me, packaged or not just don't see eye to eye in my oven. Something always go wrong, lol!

Thanks for nice comments on my own mishap at my blog! :-)

At least you can say you were young! I've learned not to do anything but focus when I'm measuring my ingredients. It's too easy to forget what cup of flour that is that your pouring into your bowl! Thanks for the story!

This is a wonderful kitchen memory story. At least you were young! I have a cousin who's now over 60 and murders recipes I've given her. Then she calls and tells me that I left something out. We've spent a lot of time on the phone figuring out where she went wrong! Nancy

So funny. When our daughter Natalie at http://homesweethideaway.blogspot.com was about 12 years old she decided to make us a 'home made' anniversary cake while we were gone.... In the recipe, she mixed up the baking soda and the flour. First it rose and over flowed in the oven and then fell flatter than a pancake!

Those are fun memories!

Kat that is so funny. I have made those kind of dumb mistakes as an adult, so as children I think you're excused. Great post. Hugs, Marty

Well, an understandable mistake, and a good lesson learned! I think it's great that as kids you and your sister were brave enough to even attempt to make cookies!

Too funny. I just found your blog through Gollum and your nice comment on my blog. I started a second blog on empty nesting but haven't added any posts yet. Can't wait to read through your posts. (My daughter is a high school Senior and my son is a third year college student who recently moved home for a bit to commute so I am not quite empty yet) Thanks for the comment, Pam

Reminds me of the first time I tried to make pancakes for my family when I was about 8 - the batter was so thick that the dollop wouldn't spred on the skillet!!

Kathy - thank you so much for stopping by DesignTies and sharing in my little wee success!! Cheers!

I bet two little girls were a bit disappointed but at least you tried.I have an aunt who is known for not cooking or should I say not cooking well and she made an oatmeal cake that never rose because she forgot to put in the flour so she basically baked a bowl of oatmeal. We could write a book, hehe.Hugs kathysue

Oh how funny....that story reminds me of a time my sister wanted to make my dad a pie and put a cup of salt in the crust instead of a tablespoon! She was really young and so proud of it....he actually ate it to appease her and she smiled big! Now that's a good dad!
